Obituary for Severt Alton Legred

Legred, Severt Alton, age 86, of Victoria, MN, died peacefully on February 20, 2023. Survived by his sister Evie (Stan) Tolzmann, brother Roger (Vi) Legred, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his wife Joan Clarke Legred, sister Marlene Lindsay, brothers Arlen, Berton, and Thilmer Legred, and parents Thomas and Marie Legred. Severt was born and raised on a farm near Bricelyn, Minnesota. After graduating from St. Olaf College, he served as a squadron officer in the Air Force. He taught high school math and Spanish in Illinois for five years before attaining his Master’s Degree in economics. He went on to teach economics and coach long distance runners at Gustavus Adolphus College before starting the Cross Country & Track programs at Golden Valley Lutheran College in Minneapolis. During his Golden Valley tenure, he coached 67 All-Americans, 11 National Champions, 5 Olympic Qualifiers, and won 3 National Team Championships. Severt was named National Coach of the Year and inducted into the NJCAA Coaches Hall of Fame in 1981. The MN State High School Athletic Directors awarded him the Hall of Fame Distinguished Alumni and National Federation State Award of Merit in 2001. He received the WCCO Good Neighbor Award in 1985 and was inducted into the Minnesota Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2005. After retiring, he started RCS School Sports with a mission to get more high school youth and area businesses involved in athletics. He was an active volunteer at Luther Park, Danbury, WI, served as recreation director for the Sons of Norway Vestland Lodge, and was First Vice Commander of the Chester Bird American Legion post in Golden Valley. He loved his church involvement, served on church councils, and volunteered wherever he could. Severt liked to celebrate, dance, and enjoy the good, God-given gift of life. He told everyone, “You are on my Gold Medal Team.” You are OUR Gold Medal, Severt! A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Friday, June 30, at 11am, with visitation one hour prior at North Blue Earth Lutheran Church, located in rural Bricelyn, MN.  A luncheon will follow at The American Legion in Bricelyn.
