Obituary for Rodney Edward "Rod" Haning

Rodney Edward Haning 64, Born 2-4-1957, Died 1-9-22 after a four-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Rod was born in Winnebago Minnesota to Marlys Andersen Haning and Elroy A. Thompson and raised by his mother and her husband William E Haning III. He attended Winnebago High School, class of 1975.

He enlisted in the US Army right out of High School during the Viet Nam War but was honorably discharged on a hardship a short time later when William became ill. Rod Re-enlisted in the US Air Force following William’s death in 1976 and trained as a Medical Laboratory Specialist. He served tours of duty at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia and Grand Forks Air Force, North Dakota. It was in Grand Forks that he met his wife, Judith Larson. The couple were married at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks on November 18, 1978. After discharge from the Air Force in 1980, Rod worked at the USDA Potato Research Lab in East Grand Forks, MN and at The USDA Human Nutrition Research Lab in Grand Forks. Rod returned to college in 1985 to pursue a career in Electronics Engineering Technology. He Graduated with high honors from University College Rochester, Minnesota in 1988 and began his career at Beckman Coulter that same year. Rod and Judy lived in Illinois for three years before returning to Minnesota and settling in Chanhassen. They had four Children together. Rod worked at Beckman Coulter for over 32 years. Rod enjoyed camping and fishing with his children and most recently, traveling with Judy and his dogs around the country in their Motorhome. When Rod wasn’t fishing, he was gazing at the stars from his telescope. He was a member of the American Legion and the Minnesota Astrological Society.

Preceded in death by his parents. Survived by his wife, Son Dustin (Wanda) Haning, Eden Prairie MN. Daughters, Shelby (Noe) Hernandez, Apple Valley MN, Allison (Carlos) Truitt, Minneapolis MN and Carly Haning, Minneapolis MN. Brother, Vernon (Kathy Meyer) Haning Winnebago MN, Brother Rory and sister Kelli of Minnesota, Grandchildren, Ayden and Kayla Hernandez, Julian, Atticus and Dahlia Truitt, and Ryan Haning. Also, his Mother-in-law Ruth Larson of Grand Forks and his dear aunt Rosebelle McQuarie of Prescott WI. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral service 11 AM Friday January 14th at Family of Christ Lutheran Church, 2020 Coulter Blvd, Chanhassen. Visitation 5-7 PM Thursday (1/13) at Huber Funeral Home, 163994 Glory Lane, Eden Prairie and at the church 1 hour prior to the service.

Memorials preferred to Family of Christ Lutheran Church of Chanhassen, Underdog Rescue, St Louis Park MN, or an animal rescue of your choice.
