Obituary for Robert Edward "Bob" Thompson

Thompson, Robert E. age 98, of Minnetonka, passed away April 1, 2022, after a brief illness. Preceded in death by his loving wife Pearl, parents, 3 brothers, 1 sister and grandson Brian Westland. Bob was born in Fargo, ND where he lived until he joined the Marines during WWII. He participated in the invasions of Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa in the Pacific. After the war he married Pearl and began a career in graphic arts that took them to Minneapolis, Manila, Philippines and Kansas City. He enjoyed fishing, bird and big game hunting in several states, the Northwest Territory, Alaska, Mexico and Denmark. Their lake home on Upper Whitefish near Brainerd brought many happy years with his growing family before moving to Sun City, AZ and returning to MN. He was a member of Robbinsdale Masonic Lodge, Minneapolis Athletic Club, Spectators, Dunkers, Golden Valley Country Club and Mpls. Gun Club. He was a Ham Radio operator (KØUSJ), built and flew radio control airplanes and soloed conventional aircraft at age 71. Bob is survived by daughters Diane (Tom) Jensen, Nancy (Roger) Westland and Patti Matejcek, 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral service 12 PM (noon) Wednesday (4/13) at Wooddale Church Eden Prairie Campus, 6300 Shady Oak Road, Eden Prairie MN 55344, with visitation starting at 11 AM. Private interment Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Brain Westland Hockey Endowment at Gustavus Adolphus College, 800 W.
