Obituary for Olga Ivanovna Gomelsky (Kolesnik)

Olga Gomelsky passed away on March 5th, 2023, just one month shy from the age of 70, in the North Memorial hospital, after a valiant 2 year battle with lung cancer. She was born on April 10th, 1953 in a small village in Ukraine close to Kharkiv to Ivan and Anastasia Kolesnick. Her parents insisted that she move to a bigger city that offered more opportunities to pursue her dreams. After high school, she received a bachelor's degree in Economics in Kharkiv and then moved to the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv where she earned a masters degree in Economics.

In Kyiv is where she met the love of her life and her future husband Ilia. They were married in 1975, less than a year after their first date. They were inseparable ever since, having two children, Vladimir and Alexander, and building their life together in Kyiv. In Ukraine, Olga worked as an economist for a major project institute.

In 1996 Olga and the family moved to the United States to pursue additional opportunities. Olga worked in a gourmet store Balducci in Greenwich, CT, starting as a clerk in the bakery department and progressing to an assistant manager over her 21 year working career in the US. In 2018, after retirement, she moved with Ilia to Eden Prairie, MN to be close to her children and grandchildren.

Throughout her life Olga was obsessively passionate about her family, and focused on instilling good manners, discipline, honesty, fairness, kindness, and hard work into her children, and eventually her grandchildren. Her dedication spread to her friends (many lifelong) and coworkers. She enjoyed bringing her family and friends together and loved feeding everyone and conversing with them. She was focused on being practical and problem solving, while spreading love and wisdom appreciated by so many. Olga is survived by her husband Ilia; brother Vasiliy; two sons: Vladimir and Alexander; and four grandchildren: Michael, Nicholas, Victor, and Arianna.
