Obituary for Larry Thorvald Johnson
Larry Thorvald Johnson was born on January 16, 1936 in Canby, Minnesota, to Thorvald N. and Minnie E. (Myers) Johnson. He died on April 5, 2023 at his home in Excelsior, Minnesota.
Larry grew up in Watertown, South Dakota and graduated from Watertown High School in 1955. He joined the Army the following day and served for 3 years. He then worked for the Minneapolis Post Office for 5 years. He married Phyllis Jean Finstad on December 31, 1963. He then attended Anoka Ramsey Community College and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from St. Cloud State University in 1970. He taught science at Northview Junior High for 25 years and retired in 1995.
His interests included spending time with the family, his John Deere A tractor, his I-Pad and being on or close to the water. He lived on a lake since his retirement. When summer neared ending he attended the Minnesota State Fair, sometimes as many as 3 times in one year. He loved to travel, mostly by car or truck, spending winters in Texas and Florida.
Survivors include wife, Phyllis Johnson, of Excelsior, Minnesota, son, Todd Johnson, of Fort Myers Beach, Florida, granddaughter’s, Nicole Johnson, of Chicago, Illinois, Lillian Johnson, of Excelsior, Minnesota, sister, Janet TeBeest (Johnson) and 5 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Leroy and Darwin.
Memorial service 11 AM Tuesday April 25, 2023 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 301 County Road 19, Excelsior, with visitation starting at 10 AM. Private family interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
