Obituary for Edith Christine Livingston (Peterson)

Age 94, Excelsior. Passed December 4, 2022. Preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Livingston; parents Clarence and Clara Peterson, sisters Juliane Wilbur, Carol Callahan, Margaret Peterson, and brother Clarence Peterson. Survived by daughter Rhonda Studer (Richard), grandson Ryan Studer, granddaughter Renee McClellan (Nicholas), and great-grandchildren Henry and Violet McClellan.

Edith was born in Neenah, Wisconsin on January 18, 1928. As a child of the Great Depression, she learned the value of thrift, hard work, faith, and the importance of family. She attended Menasha public schools through 9th grade. In 1943 she moved with her parents and brother to Baraboo, WI, as her dad had found employment at the WWII munitions factory. She graduated from Baraboo High School in 1946.

Following a long family musical tradition, Edith started singing at a young age and shared her beautiful alto voice in church choirs, singing duets with her father, a women's barbershop quartet, and as a frequent soloist for church and other events. She was a proud alumna of the St. Olaf College Concert Choir. She graduated from St. Olaf in 1954 with a BA in Education. Her first teaching job was teaching Home Economics at Excelsior Junior High. She met Ralph Livingston soon after starting her new job; they were engaged 6 weeks later and married in 1956. They enjoyed a loving and dedicated 65 years of marriage.

In 1962 they welcomed their only child Rhonda, and Edith took a 10-year "maternity leave" to be a full-time mom. She returned to teaching at Mound Westonka Public Schools and retired in 1991. In retirement she and Ralph enjoyed extensive travel, their cabin in northern Minnesota and winters in Maui. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of complete joy.

Funeral Friday, December 16 at Excelsior United Methodist Church, 881 3rd Ave. Visitation at 10 am, service at 11. Interment at Chanhassen Pioneer Cemetery.
