Donald (Don) John Nieken, 72 years, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2022 from heart failure. Don was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Ernest and Helen on March 8, 1950. He went to Cathedral High School and graduated in 1968. He attended St. Thomas University his freshman and sophomore years, then transferred to the University of Minnesota where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. Don was employed as an electrical engineer for many years until he turned his hobby of fixing up buildings into a career in rental property management.

While helping with a geometry class in high school he met his wife, Karen. They did not start dating though until a couple years later when their paths crossed once again through Don’s sister, Ruth. They got married on July 28, 1973. They raised their four children in South Minneapolis and Robbinsdale. Don enjoyed listening to classical and country music, going to Gooseberry Falls to take in the view of Lake Superior, trips to visit his sister and brother-in-law, teaching his children about electronics and home improvement, and seeing his grandchildren.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Helen Nieken. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen; four children, Jeremy (Melissa), Amanda Richter (Josh), Brian, and Sarah; eight grandchildren; and his sister Ruth Milder.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, August 26th with visitation beginning at 10 am at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 13600 Technology Drive, Eden Prairie. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately following the service.
Memorial donations can be made in Don’s honor to Our Lady of Peace Hospice, 2076 St. Anthony Avenue, St. Paul, Minnesota.
