Obituary for Robert Dudley "Bob" Grathwol

Robert Dudley "Bob" Grathwol
Grathwol, Robert Dudley "Bob" The eldest of six children, passed away on June 15, 2018. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, James Norbert and Lael Dudley Grathwol, brother Jerome and son Andrew Chervenak. Bob is survived by grateful siblings John (Rosann Berry), Joan Olson (Steve Olson), Jim, Kate (Barry Kleider), and Margaret "Pook" (Mark Gaddis). Bob was a 1973 graduate of Minnetonka High School and a 1983 graduate of the College of St. Thomas. A voracious reader, writer, and poet, Bob had a tender heart, a perceptive soul and a great distaste for any authority. Bob lived in Minneapolis for many years before relocating with his wife to Grants Pass, Oregon where he made a life for many years. Friend of Bill W. since 1979, Bob was a leader, mentor and sponsor to countless friends and family both in Minnesota and on the West Coast. He also dedicated himself to supporting our mother and father in their later years in Excelsior and Deephaven, Minnesota. Bob was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease in 2008. As he lost many of his great intellectual gifts, his inner beauty was revealed: a warm and caring heart, happy to listen and encourage his siblings who still look to him as their captain. Bob leaves behind a legacy of service in AA, and a community of loving siblings, friends and extended family. Special thanks to Ecumen Centennial Lake and Prairie Lodge staff and hospice team for their excellent care. Visitation July 2, 4:00-7:00pm (prayer service at 6:00 pm) at Huber Funeral Home, 520 Second Street Excelsior, MN and one hour prior to Mass. Mass of Christian Burial July 3, 10:30am at St. John the Baptist Church, 680 Mill Street Excelsior, MN. Memorials: The Nature Conservancy, the Minnesota Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-Minnesota), The Retreat in Wayzata, MN or donors' choice.
