Wallace Marlin "Wally" Brunswold
Brunswold, Wallace M. Age 88 of Deephaven, passed away on March 10, 2018 surrounded by family. Born to Leon and Mildred Brunswold on May 16, 1929 in St. Peter. Wally attended Cleveland High School and graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College where he played football and basketball. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, played football for Camp Breck-inridge, and was stationed in Europe. He returned to begin his teaching and coaching career in Granite Falls, and then Sleepy Eye, where he met and married Jean, his beloved wife of 62 years. Wally taught and coached at St. Charles and Rochester John Marshall High Schools before joining the inaugural staff at Rochester Mayo High School in 1966 as a guidance counselor and head boys' varsity basketball coach. In his 21-year tenure, he led the Spartans to five Big 9 conference championships and three state tournament appearances. He was inducted into both the Minnesota Basketball Coaches' Hall of Fame and the Rochester Quarterbacks' Club Sports Hall of Fame. Wally placed great value on education, helping hundreds of students navigate high school and the college admissions process. He received his Master's Degree from South Dakota State University and his Educational Specialist Degree from Northern Colorado University. Wally and Jean retired to their Leech Lake home in Walker where they loved entertaining. He was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church, and an avid golfer and fisherman. Wally was a fun, loving husband, father and grandfather. His gregarious, warm personality, and infectious laughter lifted everyone around him. He is survived by his wife Jean, daughter, Carla (Rick) Nelson, son, Kirk (Tammie Lane), grandson, Kip, granddaughter, Jenna, brother Allen (Cheryl), sister, Phyllis (Roger) Frederickson and many other family members and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, May 8 at All Saints Lutheran Church, 15915 Excelsior Boulevard, Minnetonka 55345 (952-934-3550). Visitation begins one hour prior. Interment and a gathering of friends will take place in Walker sometime this summer.
