Obituary for Vincent Donald "Vince" Decker

Vincent D. Decker, age 92, of Excelsior, formerly of Waverly, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2018 surrounded by his 6 children. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bea. He is survived by his children, Renee (Larry) Waters, Terri (Mike) McLean, Tim (Bev) Decker, Maribeth (Larry) Biess, Kristin (Ken) Dowell, and Jennifer (Tom) Rosensteel; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and brother, Clayton (Phyllis). Vince was a farm boy from Waverly at his core. He was raised during the depression in a former chicken coop without running water or electricity. Vince loved the country & recalled it fondly. He attended a one-room country school & graduated from Howard Lake High School where he played baseball, basketball & worked as a bowling alley pin setter. In 1949, after serving in the Army Air Corp, he married Beatrice Determan from Sauk Center. They moved to Litchfield and opened a barber & beauty shop. By 1956 they moved to Excelsior where they raised their six children. Dad’s small-town charm served him well as a barber and finally a stockbroker at John Kinnard Investments in Minneapolis. Even with memory loss and advanced age, Vince retained his love of a bad pun, the turn of a phrase, and making up funny nicknames for EVERYONE. He cherished his Catholic faith, his family, friends, music, and all things chocolate. He also loved expensive Scotch - as long as he wasn’t buying. If Vince were toasting us today, he would close by saying “Thank you for coming, God Bless & shut off the lights when you leave.” Special thanks to the staff at Summit Place Memory Care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist, 680 Mill St., Excelsior, on February 13, at 11:00 AM with a visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. John the Baptist Church or Alzheimer's Research.
