Obituary for Thomas Wiley "Tom" Rutter
Rutter, Thomas Wiley
age 90, of Deephaven, passed away November 20, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.
Tom was born in Laurel, Montana on the family homestead and later moved to a Ferryville, Wisconsin farm in the hills above the Mississippi.
He attended the University of Wisconsin where he met his wife, Eve, both working in the student union. Together they moved from Wisconsin to Montana, finally settling in Minnesota in 1958.
Tom’s career in the financial investment business embodied his honesty and integrity; he had an outgoing and witty way in all connections that earned him great respect. He did business across the globe, from New York to London and beyond. Both he and Eve enjoyed their many travels and adventures. He retired after a highly successful career in 1994.
He was passionate about the environment and introduced his family to a lifetime of active outdoor activities: Alpine and Nordic skiing, sailing, boating, biking, and hiking. He also cultivated a deep respect and appreciation for modern art, architecture, music, photography, and theatre.
Tom is survived by his wife, Eve (Elva Gunderson); children, Roxanna, Russell, Gregg, and Elizabeth; grandchildren, Amelia, Maxwell, Miranda, and Kaliska; nephews Tom (Barb) Gunderson, and Rick Gunderson; grand-nephew Shane (Kristen) Gunderson and grand-niece Katie Gunderson; and three great-grand-nieces. He had a quality that made each person in his life feel uniquely special.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials preferred to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum or UW-Madison Alumni Association.

Where I’m Fromby Thomas Rutter
I am from the outdoor water pump,
Woolworth’s three-scoop ice cream cone,
a snow sled and a new bicycle;
I am from the wood stove,
an old farm, no plumbing,
a view across the valley;
I am from tobacco,
large-leafed with three-inch green worms,
hard intense work;
I am from Ferryville on movie night,
from a closely-knit family,
from Guy Wiley and John Edward;
I am from going out and dressing up,
from “don’t drive so fast,”
County Fairs, and Aunt Esther’s stories;
I am from Montana and Wisconsin,
Cream of Wheat and home-baked buns;
I’m from Uncle Ed sitting in my dad’s old chair
beside the wood-burning stove
when all the neighbors came over;
I am a farm boy from rural Wisconsin,
I am from these times,
from all these memories and stories.
