Upgren, Richard L. "Dick" Age 91, of Tonka Bay. Born in Eureka, MN, he enlisted in the Navy in Oct. 1942. After mechanics training at the Navy Pier and B-24 gunner training at Whidbey Island Naval Base, he went to defend his country in the Pacific Theatre. His crew came under heavy attack in June 1944 on Wadke Island airfield, something he has never forgotten. After the war, he met his true love, Dorothy, at the Waconia Roller Rink. They married in September 1948 and lived for 63 years in the same house that Dick built (or a "mansion" as Dorothy called it). After many years as a salesman for Reinhard Brothers, he took a leap of faith and became the co-owner of Tonka Auto in Excelsior. Though he exchanged a 40 hour week for 70, he loved it. The business prospered which allowed him and Dorothy to travel. Dick loved life and was passionate about so many things: Fishing, gardening, New York crossword puzzles and golfing. But his biggest passion was duck hunting. He never missed a duck opener and was proud of it. He began hunting with his father and continued this tradition with his sons and grandchildren until he was 90 years old. He was never happier than when he could share the opener with his family. Dick was a truly incredible father, husband, grandfather and friend. He always had a smile and had an uncanny ability to make anyone he met happy. But most of all he taught us all that simple things in life were the most important. He will be forever loved, treasured and missed. Preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, and will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Mary (Allan), sons Stephen (Kathleen), and David (Elizabeth); 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
